Safety and ratings

Ratings

Every game has a rating: General, Moderate or Adult. It can’t be higher than the maturity rating of any region it runs on:

Ratings and regions
Game ratingCan run on
GeneralGeneral, Mature and Adult regions
ModerateMature and Adult regions
AdultAdult regions only

This is checked when you publish, when you ask for a region and when a region holder approves. If a region’s rating is lowered later, the game stops running there. The rating is set under Advanced editing > Outline.

Young players

Under-18s may play games, AI characters included. What they meet follows the region’s rating, and AI characters always use the lower of the game’s rating and the region’s. Lessons (the Education purpose) and class sessions are always General.

How AI characters are kept safe

  • What a player types is treated as something said in the story, never as an instruction to the AI.
  • An AI character can only do what you tick under May do. It can’t create items, money or story progress; only the ways on you set up can.
  • Every reply is checked before players see it: secrets you marked never revealed (What they never tell on Your characters), words you marked never says, and words not allowed at the rating. A reply that fails is replaced by a written line.
  • AI characters don’t ask for personal information.
  • Lines written by AI carry an AI tag.
  • AI replies are written by Anthropic’s Claude models, from the character you wrote and what the player says.

Conversations

Before players talk to an AI character, they are told:

Characters may be AI. Conversations with them are saved for 30 days; this adventure’s game masters (and your teacher in a class) can read them.

In their Journal, under Conversations, players can see their own conversations, Report a line to the grid’s moderators, delete their conversations, and make the characters forget them.

Comfort settings for players

On the Roleplay window’s Look page, players can stop stories turning the camera, reduce motion, turn character voices down, and show or hide the AI tag (it always shows in a class). Any key or click hands the camera back at once.

Your responsibilities

  • Rate your game honestly. Scary or violent stories are usually Moderate.
  • Only build from stories, names and pictures you have the right to use: your own, or works whose copyright has run out. Don’t use other games’, films’ or books’ characters or trademarks.
  • Follow the grid’s terms.
