Rules: dice and stats

Where this works

  • Works todayThe Rules page under Advanced editing in WolfStorm.
  • Next WolfViewer releaseThe same in WolfViewer.
  • On across Wolf Territories (each region at its next restart)Rolls and checks in the world.

Rules decide whether your story has stats, dice and fights. You don’t have to use any: a treasure hunt or a lesson works fine with none. Your game starts with a ready-made set; press Advanced editing at the foot of Your story map, then Rules, to see or change it.

The five presets

Rules presets

5th Edition compatibleThe six classic ability scores, hit points and armour class.A twenty-sided die for checks and saves, initiative and turn-based combat.Fantasy adventures. See below.

Dice words: “2d6” means roll two six-sided dice and add them. A check succeeds when the total reaches the difficulty (often called the DC).

Change the rules

  1. Step 1: On the Rules page, to switch to another preset, press Use this preset on its card. The Studio first tells you about any stats or checks your story uses that the new preset lacks.
  2. Step 2: Under The rules, pick a tab: Stats, Checks, Difficulties, Conditions, Combat, Progression, Creation, Dice, or Flags and reputation (what the story remembers).
  3. Step 3: Change any value. Changed values are marked changed. Reset to preset puts one back.
  4. Step 4: To add something new, such as a Luck stat, type its id in Add (type its id, Enter) and press Enter.

Use a check in the story

  • Tell the helper: “At the rune door they need a Hard check to read it.” Or on the Story page add the step Ask for a roll to a way on: which check, and the difficulty.
  • Use the way on When a roll for... succeeds or fails to decide what happens next.
  • The player sees a Roll window with a big Roll button, then Success, Failure, Critical or Fumble.

Fair dice

Every die is rolled on the grid’s server, never in the viewer, so nobody can cheat by changing their viewer. A game master can override a roll, and the log keeps both results.

The 5th Edition compatible preset

This preset follows the free System Reference Document 5.2.1 (SRD 5.2.1), the open rules for fifth-edition fantasy games. Today it has the six abilities, hit points, armour class, d20 checks and saves, initiative, attack rolls and turn-based combat.

Still to come

The preset is marked Skeleton: the data tables come later. The difficulty table, conditions, levels, classes, species, spells and items are added in a later stage; until then you add your own difficulties. Planned for later

A starter set of SRD monsters comes with battles, and you can always make your own enemies. See Battles: a fight in a box.
