Characters: written lines or AI
Where this works
- Works todayChoosing AI or written lines, the daily cap, and Talk to them now in WolfStorm’s Studio (under Advanced editing, the AI and voice and Cast talk pages).
- Next WolfViewer releaseThe same in WolfViewer, and the Cast page under Advanced editing.
- On across Wolf Territories (each region at its next restart)Characters standing in the world and talking to players.
Your characters (page 2 of the Studio) has what most games need: the name, who they are, how they think and talk, the first thing they say, what they never tell, their look and their voice. This page is for the rest.
More about a character
Press Advanced editing at the foot of Your story map, then Cast. Each character has:
- Name and look: a title such as Sheriff, and a portrait. Use what I'm wearing is here too.
- Who they are: their role, persona (up to 2000 characters), manner and greeting, and their Home spot: where they stand when nothing is happening.
- What they know: facts they can share, Secrets - never revealed, and words they never say.
- Lines: idle lines they say when nothing is happening.
What a character does in one particular box is on the Story page, under On duty: their goal for that box, the written lines they say in order, and quick replies: buttons of up to 24 characters, each with what the player says. The easy way is to tell the helper on Your story map: “Ma Dalton is here and tells them the robbers rode west.”
Story characters are clearly marked
In the world, a story character has the title Story character under their name, so nobody mistakes them for a real resident.
Written lines or AI?
Choose on the AI and voice page, under Characters:
Written lines only
Free
Characters say the lines you wrote and answer quick replies. Nothing is typed freely. The story still works fully.
AI characters
You pay per conversation from your WolfCredits
Players can type anything and the character answers in character, from what you told them they know. They still say your written lines first when a player clicks them or presses a quick reply.
What AI costs
- The game’s owner pays, from their WolfCredits. Players never pay.
- 1 credit pays for 1 US cent of AI cost.
- The Studio’s estimate is about 0.026 credits a talk turn, so 100 turns cost about 2.6 credits, plus a little extra the first time a character speaks in a box. You pay what is really used, and the meter shows it.
Limits keep the bill under control. You set them on the AI and voice page:
| Limit | Starts at | Means |
|---|---|---|
| Daily cap | 100 credits a day | The most this game spends on AI in a day. You can set 0 to 5000. |
| Talk turns per player | 200 a day | How many AI answers one player gets from this game each day. |
| All your games | 500 credits a day | The most all your games together may spend in a day. |
| GM assistant | 50 credits a day | The most the AI assistant may spend for you in a day when you run a game live. |
When the money runs out
When the daily cap is reached or your credits run out, the game carries on by itself with written lines, and goes back to AI when the cap or your credits allow. Players see no error. This is why it is worth writing lines even for AI characters.
The meter on the same page shows what was spent today, the last seven days, and your WolfCredits, with a Buy credits button that opens the Wolf Credits page.
Other AI settings
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Free typing (Free chat in WolfStorm) | On: players may type to characters. Off: quick replies only. |
| Accuracy mode | Characters answer only from your source cards and say when they don’t know. For lessons. |
| Improvise | The AI Director may write short narration within a box. |
| Translate | Characters answer in the session’s language. |
On the Cast page, May do lists the only things an AI character is allowed to do, such as Give the player a hint or Refuse what the player asks. An AI character can never hand out items or money or skip the story by itself: only the ways on you set up can.
Test a character now
Press Talk to them now on the character (the Cast talk page under Advanced editing). It is a test conversation, so nothing changes for players, but AI turns are paid like players’ turns. Switch Preview without AI on to hear the free written-lines version.
