Change the story while people play

Where this works

  • Works todayWolfStorm: The live game, with Update the live game… and Undo the last update…, for a game that is published.
  • Next WolfViewer releaseWolfViewer: Change the live game under Advanced editing > Publish, with the same two buttons.

Your game is live and people are playing it. You can still change it: fix a typo, add a box, take one out. Nobody is thrown out of the game, and nobody’s conversation changes half-way through.

How players move to the new version

  • Each party moves to the new version at its next box. Whatever they are doing now (a conversation, a fight) finishes the old way first.
  • Boxes are matched by their id, so a box you only changed the words of carries on as it is.
  • If you took out the box a party is on, you choose where they go instead. They are told with a short line in the story, never an error.
  • What the story remembers (items, honour, reputation) keeps its meaning, and companions stay with their players.
  • Players who already finished can play the new version.

Update the live game

  1. Step 1: Make your changes as usual, with the helper or by hand.
  2. Step 2: Under Advanced editing > Publish, press Update the live game.... Nothing changes yet: first you see a preview.
  3. Step 3: The preview says, in plain sentences, who is where and what the update does to them: “1 player is at ‘The Saloon’; that box is removed and they will go to ‘Main Street’.” It also shows how many are playing, how many are in a fight, and the new boxes.
  4. Step 4: For each box you took out, check where its players go. The helper suggests a box (or, without AI, the nearest box in the story is suggested). Choose another if you like: in WolfStorm pick it from the list, and you can also change What they are told (in the story); in WolfViewer press Change....
  5. Step 5: Press Update now. The new version is live, and the Studio says how many players move to it at their next box.

If something changed meanwhile

If your game, or the live version, changed after the preview (in another window, say), the update is not made: the preview is shown again so you can check it.

Undo the last update

Changed your mind? Press Undo the last update.... You see a preview of going back, then Undo now (WolfStorm: Undo it now) puts the version that was live before back as a new version. Both are kept in the History, and your work is left as it is. Pressing it again goes one more version back.

A plain Publish still works too. See Publish it.
